Steve Carlson was made redundant when his firm was taken over. Unable to find another job, he did a stint in a Greek coffee bar as a barista.

When summer arrived Steve felt restless, so he arranged to swap roles with a Greek family member for the season. The exchange brought new friendships and adventures — a carefree stay he was reluctant to leave behind.

Trying to remain in Greece on limited funds, Steve put his computer expertise to work and slowly built a living for himself. In time he married and started a family.
